Passwordless sudo is evil. We likely have it because it was simpler than having to educate users new to both Pi and Linux (and coming from a windows background) about the whole Linux/Unix owner, group, and permissions system.
That's the underlying issue; Linux isn't suitable for noobs and many home users and makers without deploying a kludge like passwordless 'sudo'. Without that people will just walk away or use 'root'.

I am told there are ways to have more fine-grained security or protection which may be more appropriate but 'ain't nobody got time for that' if it's not pre-configured out of the box and easy to work with.

How one takes Linux, which is perfectly suited to multi-user use with admin and user tasks segregated, and turn it into an equally perfect system for use by single owner-users who wear both hats and want things simple and easy, I don't know.

Maybe it's the wrong tool for the job ?
