Seems that is what the OP is doing. Posting here to see how others here have done it and how did it go.It's how I start my projects sometimes, with a "how are others doing it?" and then go from there.
To the OP, I looked into this a bit earlier this year and what I found first and foremost is that you likely will have to pay for a service that can facilitate the SMS parts. Some mobile phone services have or had SMS gateways you can use where you send it as an email to the phone number through gateway. But T-Mobile, my service for example, appears to have dropped that free gateway option some years ago which is disappointing.
My own interest was with using a Pico W, rather than a Pi, and for now I have been playing around with the free version the Adafruit IO service utilizing the email option (one way only; getting alerts). Adafruit is a reselling of the Pico, RP2040 chip devices, and Raspberries so I think it is OK to mention them here. They have an SMS option as well but again, you have to pay a subscription for that.
