...it is not connecting to the router. I'm assuming it is waiting for me to log in.

...To get an ip I need to login, making it a cycle.

I'm just wondering what I'm doing different from others setting up their pi, where it connects automatically.
The WiFi connection will start up without you needing to log on so this is the problem you need to look at first of all.

A few thoughts:

1) Do you have a visible network? The Pi can be very fussy with networks where the WiFi SSID is hidden sometimes. Try to connect to a visible WiFi network till you get everything set up.
2) If possible, connect to a WiFi SSID that is not shared between 2.4GHz and 5GHz (i.e. you have two DIFFERENT SSIDs for the networks) - go for the 2.4GHz network if possible.
3) Check the name and password only have the characters A-Z, a-z, 0-9 with '-' (hyphen / minus sign) and '_' (underscore) being the only other characters used - do not use international characters (e.g. ä or è etc) or commas, quotes, brackets or other symbols. This reduces the issues with international keyboards and the Pi defaulting to the UK locale / keyboard etc.
4) Keep the length below 15 characters for the network name and password - reduces typing errors
