Thanks for the reply. I went through the Preferences-Print Settings dialog in the Pi Desktop, and I was able to select my printer from the (long) list of HP options. However that was trying to set it up on /dev/ttyUSB0, which I know is not correct, because that port is connected to something else, not the printer.

I have hplip 3.21.2+dfsg1-2 so I appear to be OK there. There are a number of hp-* commands (like hp-probe) available at the command line but none of them seem to be able to detect my printer on the USB bus.

Since I have the printer working using the network interface I think I'll run with that for a bit and hope that it's more reliable on the Pi than it was on Windows.
