I recently bought a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W and was disappointed that it did not boot with my clone.
Now in the raspberry Pi imager, you must define your target hardware.
Depends on the age of the OS you cloned. If it pre dates the release of the device you want to boot it on it won't work for reasons that should be obvious. This is nothing new.
As for compatibility, the latest 32bit RPiOS should run on all models (though you get a 64bit kernel/32bit userland on models that support 64bit). 64bit images will only boot on 64bit capable Pi models. A pure 32bit (kernel and userland) won't boot on a Pi 5.
