NVMe interface is PCIe 3/4/5 with 4 lanes. The Pi 5 has PCIe 2 with only one lane. Similar to their USB 3 sockets. The SSD connected direct will run slightly faster as the USB overheads are up to 10%. You will not get NVMe 4 speed so might as well buy the cheaper NVMe 3 SSDs.
For one SSD, there will be little difference from a Pi 4. The real advantage of a Pi 5 is separate lanes for the NVMe and each USB 3, letting you run two or three SSDs in parallel without losing speed. In a Pi 4, they would all share the one USB 3 lane.
