A final update on this: I never found a solution, so ended up rebuilding from scratch starting with a current OS. Copying the firmware files as per https://pip.raspberrypi.com/categories/ ... rmware.pdf did allow the old disk image to boot on the newer-revision board, but something in the Linux domain to do with the screen must have been incompatible with the newer firmware and I never found what.
I guess the lesson from this is that if you have some kind of embedded situation where updating the OS is difficult, consider keeping spare boards purchased at the same time in stock, because there's no guarantee a new Pi will be a drop-in replacement for an older one of the same model.
