Media centres • Codec HAT / Software setup to replace ancient Roku SoundBridges

I've been using Roku SoundBridge Network Music Players for years. Roku stopped making them in 2008.

They are barely usable as media players these days*, but they have three important features:
  1. a display you can read across the other side of the room;
  2. an IR remote;
  3. a way of connecting to a music server.
I know that lots of Raspberry Pi players can do the third one, but is there a widely-supported HAT or kit that can manage the first two as well?

*: they only support old very insecure wifi, so I use them wired. The ancient Coldfire SoCs can barely keep up with a moderately-sized music library. The once-beautiful VFDs are fading to invisibility. Also, each one eats a wall-wart PSU every 3-4 years
