So my next step is to find a simple way to let the Pi know when it sees power on a 230v line.
The safe way is by using a current clamp round one of the cables carrying 240V. That generates a low voltage AC signal that can be detected safely by the RPi (watching out for AC which will fry electronics).

My solar PV, my home battery and my car charger all use that technique.
