Same problem here. Hardware is a Pi 3B (several years old), with the official 7" touchscreen display. Connection is a 1m (!) long CSI/DSI flat ribbon cable, plus Gnd+5V coming via separate wires. The whole installation is in a large metal box, with the display in a separate small plastic box, connected via about 15cm of metal conduit. There have been no recent software or hardware changes to the pi itself, except I recently added a WiFi access point into the same room (about 2m away from the pi + display).
Yet suddenly, the line "rpi_touchscreen_attiny 10-0045: Unknown Atmel firmware revision: 0xe1" showed up in dmesg on every boot, and the backlight entry in /sys/class/backlight was not created. The usual fix of adding "dtparam=i2c_vc_baudrate=50000" to /boot/config.txt worked fine.
