UPDATE - I looked in sudo mount proc and got this error:
pi@raspberrypi:~ $ sudo mount proc
mount: (hint) your fstab has been modified, but systemd still uses
the old version; use 'systemctl daemon-reload' to reload.
pi@raspberrypi:~ $ systemctl daemon-reload
==== AUTHENTICATING FOR org.freedesktop.systemd1.reload-daemon ====
Authentication is required to reload the systemd state.
Authenticating as: ,,, (pi)
Password:
==== AUTHENTICATION COMPLETE ====
I then tried to map the usb drive again with 'use different credentials' checked and this time it asked for the password for pi. But then gave the error:
"The network folder specified is currently mapped using a different user name and password.
To connect using a different username and password, first disconnect any existing mappings to this network share"
