I figured there was going to be some sort of manual steps after the initial cut of the SSD card.
Negative.
None of the manual steps kmacdchap describes are usually necessary.

The fact that your "run ssh-keygen" button is greyed out do can indicate there is a problem with your specific system though.
Can mean you already have a private/public key in ~/.ssh/id_rsa, in which case rpi-imager will cowardly refuse to overwrite your existing key.
In that case I would expect you to see base64 encoded data filled into the "set authorized_keys" field though, that was filled in automatically. And not the stuff you typed there manually.
Or that ssh is not installed (try: "sudo apt install openssh-client", before restarting Imager).

Or that you are running some kind of containered Imager instead of Imager from the .deb
