Installing and configuring wireguard on my router running openwrt router was a huge pain in the ass. Took lots of reading and leaning to configure and in the end I was not happy with it. It had glitches that I could not figure out.
In contrast, installing PiVPN on a Pi and having it working correctly took only a few minutes. All I had to do in the router was to forward 1 port to the Pi running the VPN.
That is the configuration I kept, running wireguard on the Pi, not on the router.
