This sounds like a good idea. A quick Google, however, suggests that MOSFETs are not so simple to integrate with RPi, as they require gate voltages greater than 3.3V. However, I wonder if using the PCA9685 and applying the optional 5V power (V+ pin) this might work more easily with a MOSFET?You might also want to consider replacing the TIPs with MOSFETs. They have much lower on resistance so you won't waste so much power, and might be able to lower the voltage on the solenoids. Some MOSFET arrays even include the flyback diodes on an extra pin but obviously you need one that can drive the current of all its solenoids on at once.
