Interfacing (DSI, CSI, I2C, etc.) • Re: GPIO pins and volts question

It depends on what the device is, how much current it draws and what other connections it has to the RasPi board.
It's quite complicated. I have a Hitachi-LG DL10N disc drive out of an xbox 360 slim, which I want to connect to my RPI. The disc drive has a somewhat unique 12-pin power connection cable. since I can't find a converter cable that converts this unit to usb, I am making my own converter using a breadboard, jumper wires and the RPI's GPIO pins. Below a picture of the pinout, which I am basing this on. (I am using the female connector)

I am using jumper wires to connect all the connectors needs to the breadboard and than to the RPI.

As you can see, pin 8 (of the female connector) uses +5 volt. But, I read, that you must reduce the 5 volt down to the 3.3 volt the drive needs. So I was wondering if you just can connect it directly to the +3.3 volt RPI pin, instead of connecting it to a +5 volt pin and reducing it down to 3.3 volt on the breadboard, using resistors or something.

For the drive's 12 volt needs, I am using a external power source, also connected with each other on the breadboard.

Furthermore it has no connections, other than that pin 4 of the female connector is connected to a GPIO pin on the RPI, so with a simple code I can change the HIGH/LOW status of that pin to, hopefully, control the disc drive to open or close.

Please let me know if I have made any mistakes, I haven't tested this build yet.
