The script worked on pi5. it's frustrating that the 'official' instructions only worked on 33% of my hardware. The other build on pi4 is still chugging along, it only has 4GB of RAM and the build speed reflects that.

Thanks for your assistance. For my next trick I'm going to try to build a kernel with symbols intact. Wish me luck.

I guess this is solved. Technically I didn't resolve the issue of why the command-line builds were failing, but I suppose a working script is an acceptable solution.
