Can you recommend one that is known to work?
Orico USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C M.2 NVMe SSD enclosure M2PV-C3
The M2PV-C3 enclosure uses the Realtek RTL9210 chip for the USB interface. The chip works reliably as it is tested to the higher standard of USB 3.1 instead of the low USB 3 standard.

Raspberry Pi Zero 2 as a boot disk through the USB 2 interface:
Sequential write speed 29332 KB/sec (target 10000) – PASS
Sequential read speed 33586 KB/sec (target 10000) – PASS
Random write speed 3441 IOPS (target 500) – PASS
Random read speed 2771 IOPS (target 1500) – PASS

For the Pi, I use NVMe SSDs left over from upgrades to other machines. The USB 3.1 interface means I can plug the device into my Pi 5 or Intel notebook for maximum read and write speeds when testing or backing up.
