For those looking for alternative firmware, the Boantong factory firmware file BAT_AT_V1.7.1.0_1M.bin works correctly on the example UPD, TCP client and server examples referenced earlier by Willthrom on 30th December 2023, which were supplied from his provider.
This firmware is available from https://docs.ai-thinker.com/en/%E5%9B%B ... 7%E6%80%BB

With respect to flashing the RP2040+ESP8285 module on Linux, I haven't had success with esptool.py, but there are a number of Chrome/Chromium based browser tools available. I found ESPWebTool: https://esp.huhn.me/ worked well as follows:-

1. Plug module into USB port with ESP8285 boot switch held down
2. Select serial connection - should be one on top: Tiny USB device (ttyACMx) - paired (where x is 1...n for number of connect attempts)
3. Either select Erase or Program. If the latter, then:
3.1 Browse to firmware file in top section, Select the file, then
3.2 Select Program (while holding down Boot switch)
