Thanks @bensimmo. It is my first Pi of any style, and loving it so far. Once I unplugged my monitor, the behavior did not return. And as I'm running this Pi as a NAS server I only installed the lite OS so am really not using my monitor any more since the Pi is working now. But Im already eyeing another one for new and different projects! So for sure I'll let you know if it happens again.
I likely won't use this monitor for anything other than Pi stuff - it's very old and something I just picked up cheap at the Recycle PC store. If I end up doing more work using the desktop OS maybe I'll consider a newer monitor -
