USB HID keyboard is certainly possible but there are potential problems most notably powering the 500. USB device mode only works via the USB C power port and many PCs can't supply enough current.
That said, at least one person on here has turned a 400 into a HID keyboard but, sorry, I don't have the link to hand.
I do have some old code that does USB HID keyboard on a zero. You can find that here. It should work on a 500 but as I don't have one I can't test that. Even if it doesn't it might help you get started.
