Troubleshooting • installing/setup of Raspberry pi

Hi all
Raspberry is new for me - excuse me if I pose dumb questions.

Last week I bought a Raspberry pi 5 with HQ camera. I (thought that I) installed the Raspberry Pi with microSD card.
I can access it with PuTTy and a VNC Driver.

As I have some problems with the HQ camera, (I don't succeed in writing images to the microSDcard) I started ruling out things.

I took out the microSD card and restarted. Then I can no longer access the Raspberry Pi (at least via PuttY and VNCDriver).
a) Does that mean that my raspberry pi boots from the microSD card?
b) Is it possible to put all necessary files on the raspberry pi itself - so it can start with SD card? Or is a Raspberry pi meant to run with a microSD as 'hard drive'.
c) If a raspberry Pi can run without microSD ... how do I get installation files on the raspberry pi 5?

Regards
Diederik
