Can you SSH into the Pi? I'm just a beginner, know very little, but got the same symptoms on the monitor for a while. It turned out that something had messed with configs, and the Pi was not running in graphical mode. If SSH works, I think it's the command
systemctl get-default
that tells you what mode it's in.
