bls (for some reason I don't have options to reply directly to your message),

In the absence of a DHCP server, I need to fall back to "link local" addressing. NM doesn't appear to do this. I've not tried to investigate/solve this yet, so that's next!

I also use dhcpcd's "lastleaseextend" option. This is something I could possibly do without...
Not sure what you mean by "reply directly". These forums do not provide a way for you to email or privately message a single person. You CAN quote reply what I've written into your message (like I'm doing here).

There is a way to provide LL addressing with NM. Forum user thagrol has a post on implementing zeroconf with NM.

The network plugin in sdm (also see this forum post), a RasPiOS configuration tool, also supports configuring zeroconf on a network interface.

Not sure whether NM provides a lastleaseextend mechanism. This is the first I've heard of it. I see that the dhcpcd man page states "this violates RFC 2131, section 3.7, which states the lease should be dropped once it has expired."
