If you have a multimeter, measure the resistance between SCL & VIN and SDA & VIN when the device is not connected. The resistance should be somewhere between 1–10 kOhm. If it measures open circuit, you'll need to add pull-up resistors between SCL & VIN and SDA & VIN.
The product photos from Amazon look like there may be resistors, but a picture of your wiring would really help.
AHTxx sensors are pretty solid once you get the wiring right. Their humidity readings go way off into hyperspace for ~24 hours if you solder near them, though
