You could try setting speeds.normal.pdaf_frames to 0, which will make it abandon PDAF and use CDAF exclusively -- but then it will auto-focus only once per session, instead of continuously! Though it might still be an interesting experiment.
(The code is here: af.cpp. It's very awkward to rebuild and install but there are some instructions here. You'd need to uninstall the standard version first, and rebuild the apps afterwards -- if you attempt this, a fresh SD card is recommended so that you'll still have a working one!)
IMX708 uses special shielded PDAF pixels on the sensor, and they all have a Green colour filter. I'll have to confirm their sensitivity to IR but on at least some Sony cameras they tend to be equally sensitive above 800nm. Of course with a longer wavelength, there will be more diffraction effects which could reduce the effect of the shielding.
