Do the SD card and the SSD have the same UUIDs/PARTUUIDs?
What's the SD card been formatted to?
What OS are you using?
Try changing splash to nosplash and removing quiet from cmdline.txt. You'll see a lot more messages during boot but that may shed some light on what's going on.
