OK, Pi Hut were excellent and after trying some diagnostic steps they replace my Pi 5 without quibble.
With the new pi and an existing SD card I had instant sucess. So I plugged back in the cooler and PiHat/SSD and yes that booted first time too. Fantastic, what a great little computer this is!
