A couple of comments:

1) Yes, I remember having the same bad reaction whenever Wolfram/Mathematica was going to be updated. I'm not 100% sure exactly why that stopped being a problem. Maybe because I am running such old versions of Raspbian/RaspiOS that updates simply don't come (which is a good thing). Also, I think I have uninstalled it from some systems - for just this reason.

2) I realized that was I wrote earlier is not 100% accurate. The claim that things don't take up RAM unless you use them. Not true in the case of system services thingies - which tend to set themselves up to run automatically (i.e., on boot) when they are installed. So, a case could be made for uninstalling them (or just using systemd commands to disable them from auto-starting).
