it'll be much easier to just switch to X11 to get the old desktop back.I suggest you to use RPIOS as a base for your favorite desktop environment. In RPI-5 it is possible to install pretty much any Linux desktop environment on top of the lite version of the official OS. Or you can go a different route and pick another OS (like Manjaro). Take the time to customize whatever desktop you choose and you will be happy. The issues with "wayland" is universal, so regardless of what desktop you choose, you will have some trouble, but fixes are on the way, so i think the same time around next year we will have a very solid desktop experience even with wayland. Gotta be patient i guess.Bookworm LATEST Image - Mar 12 2024

Some might say there's workarounds for those issues. But the manual workaround should be a temporary solution while waiting for the permanent fix. It's been many months now and even the LATEST Raspberry Pi OS image doesn't come with the fix.
Please advise.
while the new wayland/wayfire is functional, it is limited compared to the old desktop.
