V1 is using a bridge chip for Mipi DSI to RGB. You can try using the Driver only, but AFAIK you will have to 'talk' to the MCU on the display as well. that's done by Firmware.

new V1 screens are using a different chip ; REV4 PCB which uses ICN6211 bridge (instead of Toshiba). https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/bl ... -icn6211.c
