What's difficult is the implication that
a: something has changed and
b: that the chip is by any sensible definition properly 5V tolerant - it isn't
It would have been much better to leave the documentation on this unchanged so that only users who understand the implications of compliant startup voltage ordering would chose to rely on the chip in this respect.
My view FWIW is to ALWAYS use level converters and then there is never an issue.
1. Something has changed - we've tested the device thoroughly, and issued a statement that the device is 5v TOLERANT.
2. It is tolerant, according to the documentation we provide, and the phrase tolerant is widely used to show a device can accept 5v on input despite being a 3v3 device. - here is one example from 11 years ago. https://electronics.stackexchange.com/q ... n-3-3v-pic.

You may have a different idea of the meaning of tolerant, but that may not match the industry meaning.
