I was trying to get my Raspberry Pi with 4 Gig working and could not get the HyperPixel to work,
As I could not log as root user, to edit the config.txt file at boot/firmware, but maybe the Superuser was never set, maybe in a few weeks I will get it out again and make up a new mini SD card, and try again, then take to the branch agent of Raspberry at a university and show them as I was going to do a few days ago.

One would think, the raspberry Pi might pick the new I2C device in the HyperPixel display and automatically add on the extra lines to the config.txt file

I'll offer the suggestion that your headline query about lsb_release has pretty much zero relevance to your practical issue of correctly configuring an i2c interface to support your display.

The default user configuration for all official versions of Raspbian/RasPiOS since the RPi universe began has been that the primary user account can always gain root/superuser privileges - by use of the sudo command prefix among other techniques - so for most users there is never a requirement to log on as the root user.

If you are using a Desktop version of RasPiOS you can trivially enable the i2c interface by using the Raspberry Pi Configuration tool found under Preferences in the 'Big Raspberry' Start Menu at the top left of the screen.
