Why not just use this instruction:
unsigned long UMULL{S} RdLo, RdHi, Rm, Rs N Z C* V* RdHi,RdLo := unsigned(Rm * Rs)
I assume he's on RP2040 (CortexM0+) where that instruction doesn't exist.
