I am using Pi4 model b with the x400 3.0 amp hat. with the Trixie-os. the old way for running a script on startup doesn't seem to work anymore.
Which old way? There are several.

Beyond that you'll need to find a video playback application that doesn't need the desktop.
And if you want help with cron you'll need to tell us what you put into which user's crontab and what errors you're getting.
