Seconded. Raspberry Pi OS (not least because it's the most used and most supported on here).
Takes about 8GB (including boot partition) on my systems but that's with user files and additional stuff installed.
If you need to use less storage, use the lite release. If you want a Desktop you could start with lite and add the lightweight desktop of your choice.
In terms of RAM usage, I've booted lite on a 256MB RAM 1B and desktop on a 512MB 1B. Not a very fast or responsive desktop but it does boot.
