I would like to automate some tasks in my new greenhouse. This will be a slowly evolving project as this will be my first greenhouse and first Pi.
A few basic questions:
- Greenhouses are a pretty harsh environment, so I was thinking of keeping the Pi in my house and communicate with sensors and actuators remotely. Can this be done effectively wirelessly. Right now, a Govee temperature sensor in the greenhouse is connecting without any problems to my wi-fi router which is about 50 ft away, so wi-fi would probably work. Or is cable the better way to go? If cable, what should I use. I’m planning on digging a trench for electricity soon, so I could include communication wire(s) at the same time. Of course if wi-fi is sufficient, I would prefer that solution.
- If the Pi is in the house, is a ESP32 in the greenhouse the best way to read sensors and control actuators?
- The Pi will mainly be used for automating greenhouse task, but I would also like to use it as a NAS (a different project). What Pi model should I purchase? I don’t mind spending more money to get a more powerful model that might serve me better as I add functionalities.
- Is it better to purchase a Pi and add individual components as needed, or purchase a kit that comes with some basic components. Also, are there kits specifically made for greenhouse automation?
