Hi, perhaps you could say a bit more about your application and the timing requirements that you have?
In general, the quickest way to get frames from the camera would be to leave it running the whole time. If your camera is running at 30fps (full resolution images would generally run at a slower framerate, of course) then you can get an image is less than 1/30s. By comparison, calling out to rpicam-still probably takes you a second or two? Might this kind of approach work for you?
