Used to be plugged directly into PCIe but nowadays usually a USB to I2S/SPDIF/TOSLINK/MIDIdongle as the PCIe chip used went EOL.
But TBH most studios are converting everything to Ethernet now - far less hassle with longer distances and just the one cable type.
(Well apart if you're a certain blonde keyboard player who still loves DIN MIDI
