Well hopefully OP is using rechargeables and NiMh is 1.2V so that is 10-12 pieces to get 12V and then to get 5A@5V you still have at last 2A current per single AA in 12V setup which is quite a lot! so better pair in two so final count is 20-24 AAs minimumI'm guessing at least 8 to get "12V"
Odd choices really. (1) to use AA instead of Li-Pol/Ion and (2) to start from 12V when you need 5 and single cell is 1.2-1.5.
Was googling a bit how much current disposable alkaline AAs can handle but did not find anything definite. but I guess NiMh can handle bigger currents and 1A should not reduce capacity too much(?) so 2000mAh Eneloops could last over 1 hour at 1A for sure(?). Only found this https://www.intronixtech.com/myoguide-p ... batteries/ which indeed says NiMh can last longer already at 1mA current
