Beginners • Want to control 4 pin PWM fan speed with Pi 5

Hi All...

I'm somewhat of a newb. I assembled a dual NVMe NAS with a CM5 and got it working no problem. I built an analog to digital converter using HiFiberry's Studio ADC XLR board that seems to work as expected. Pretty basic stuff not requiring much other than an internet stuff and an OMV setup or two.

Due to the high cost of NVME all of the sudden I have has to switch my NAS strategy back to spinning 3.5" disks. So, I assembled a R Pi 5 with a Waveshare dual SATA board. I printed out some brackets that holds the HDD, then a 90 mm 12V 4 pin PWM fan, then the Pi on top. Everything worked as expected knowing I have no way to control fan speed yet.

The fan is fed with 12V from the SATA board, GND connected to pin 6 of the Pi, PWM connected to pin 12 (GPIO 18), No Tach wire connected

The fan spins at minimal speed after the Pi boots, if I remove PWM wire it spins at full speed.

I would like to increase the fan speed to 50% on all the time regardless of temp.

I'm reading Pin 12 (GPIO 18) is the ping to use for PWM control but I haven't found a way to get this to work.

Any suggestions?
