I've seen it happening that the kernel picked the highest available resolution from EDID, even when a different mode got forced by kernel command line.
The only solution I've figured out was providing an EDID binary which has the required timing as preferred only.
If you want to have different mode later on one can still define a custom mode in wayfire.
