General discussion • Re: RPi 5 as a desktop daily driver?

I would translate "daily driver" to the main computer you use for the majority of your computing tasks.
Or should it encompass all computing tasks - when in front of it, because I'll accept different devices can be better or more appropriate when not, and that also applies to PC.

It's that not being able to do something, having to use a PC for some tasks, which is what I think detracts from something truly being a daily driver. Having to use Windows-only software is what precludes me from calling it a daily driver. Other than that I think I could.
It seems to me that according to this definition a 'daily driver' would not need GPIO pins.
I agree. Most PC are daily drivers and have no direct GPIO. A Pi doesn't need GPIO but it's a bonus it has it even if not used. I would not consider using GPIO as a generic "daily driver" use case.

It would be interesting to know how many people do use GPIO and how many don't - excluding just fitting an LCD display during installation. I would predict a good many people using a Pi as a desktop replacement never use the GPIO.

Despite doing a reasonable amount of electronics I have never used Pi GPIO. I added a button to my main Pi 3B and that was it. I added the same to a headless PC using a COM Port CTS line. Both so I could easily have spoken status reports, not electronic development.
