My TV shows Red when off, Bright Blue when on. It's cable box does something similar. Dim Green when off, bright when on and streaming content. I don't mind so much as long as its not illuminating the room its in.To show you have power connected - lots of older electronics had a red LED to show power is plugged in then they moved to ridiculous bright blue ones to show its active....
then why even have the red led?
Gut feel - it's a hang over from Pi boards with no power switch and I wonder if it just got left behind in the design of the 5?
I have several Pi Camera surveillance setups. I turn the LED's off to avoid seeing their reflections on a window in the video stream. They are viewing what's outside from the indoor, side of a window.
I'd actually like to see more functionality in that LED. Like having the color based on the SOC temperature.
Those devices aren't actually "off" though are they? They are in standby mode. Usually you can turn such devices back on using a remote. That's not the case with the PI. Having the LED on, just consumes power for no benefit. To me, it's not really an issue because; as I said, earlier; I connect my 5 via a switchable multi block, but clearly to some people it's a nuisance.
