what brings you to that assumption? I would prefer using a GERT VGA 666 HAT in favor of an HDMI to VGA adapter because it's much easier to tweak the Timings..
I'm basically following what they did in the German thread because I'm trying to get the Pi to work as the old Atari ST did with its branded monitors. But also keeping modern connectivity such as HDMI. So DPI probably won't work too well.

sorry, never used DPI for converting it to VGA, but connected lots of different displays to DPI
