The firmware knows nothing about 3rd party displays, so it is only when the kernel takes over the display pipeline that it will enable them. That is generally about 4-5 seconds after the kernel has started.
The firmware does know how to enable the HDMI output, therefore it puts up the rainbow screen and early boot information there.
